Volunteering
We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team and help keep the railway running into the future. We are very inclusive, and it does not matter if you have no previous experience - it is enthusiasm that counts!
This page provides information on some of the activities you can get involved with across our wonderful railway.
Common Volunteering Questions
Why volunteer?
People volunteer for many reasons including wishing to learn new skills, socialising with like-minded people, interacting with the public, supporting conservation work and lots more.
How often do I need to volunteer?
You can give as much time as you wish. Some volunteer regular days each week, others a couple times a month and some on special days when we need more volunteers.
Do I need special skills?
No, everyone brings different skills and experience to the railway. Full training is provided for all roles.
How do I get involved?
Speak to a member of the railway, complete a general induction and we can get you involved. Or message info@oklr.org.
Areas To Volunteer
Train Operations
Learn to become a Shunter, Signalman or Guard. Then potentially a Diesel Driver and Steam Fireman and finally a Steam Train Driver. All training provided.
Trackwork & Lineside Clearance
This is mainly work done in the off season - it's great exercise, better than any gym.
Engineering Workshop, Carriage and Wagon
Help to maintain and restore our fleet of heritage steam and diesel engines. One is over 100 years old!
Also, carriages and wagons need woodwork, painting and general maintenance.
Special Events
Weyfest Music Festival & Santa Special trains are the railway's busiest times, and we always need lots of volunteers to run these events.
Mix & Match
Come along and try a bit of everything and decide what you fancy getting involved in. There are no problems if you want to chop and change what you like doing.
Other Useful Information
We run most weekends from March to October plus special events. Please check our times.
Volunteers under 16-years-old need to have a parent or guardian accompanying them at all times.
Self-assessment medical form needs to be filled annually for all working volunteers.
